The all-university Department of German and French languages was created on the basis of the Department of Foreign Languages of the National University of Tajikistan. The first head of the department was the candidate of philological sciences Shahobova Malohat Badriddinovna. In November 1964, on the basis of this Department, the Department of English and the Department of German and French were opened.
The main tasks of the departments were teaching students to read and translate fiction and special literature. At the University, students study English, French and German. Latin was also studied at the faculties of history, law and biology.

The Department widely uses equipped phonetic rooms, with the help of which students and graduate students improve their knowledge of a foreign language. Every year, the department holds a “French-language” day of the French language with the participation of active students from all faculties of the University, representatives of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Pedagogical University named after S. Aini and the Institute of Languages, as well as with the direct participation of the French from the Bactria organization. Reciting poems by French poets, singing famous French songs, arranging interesting performances, students cheer up participants and guests, and also demonstrate to the audience their satisfaction in learning French.
In the early years, the Department strengthened its cooperation with the University of Klagenfurt for the exchange of experience. Accordingly, in 1988, teachers from the University of Klagenfurt came to the Department of German and French of the Tajik State University for an internship.
The Department is constantly working to update the education system, as well as conducting effective research and educational and methodological activities that play a big role in improving the methods of learning languages, and the results of these studies are presented at a scientific and theoretical conference, which is held annually at the University.
The Department constantly carries out research activities. The teachers of the Department are engaged in the study of new methods of teaching a foreign language, the development of new ways and means of studying it and comparing it with the Tajik language in vocabulary, grammar and literature.
The Department has strong scientific ties with other research institutes of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and Russia. Also, constant scientific and methodological cooperation has been established with the departments of foreign languages of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, State Pedagogical University named after S. Aini, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc. The scientific achievements of the department are expressed in candidate dissertations of many scientists who defended their scientific work at the Institutes of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
Over the past two years, the department has increased the number of young teachers who are graduates of the country’s universities, and all teachers of the Department are engaged in research on scientific topics, some of which are already ready for completion.
